My reflections on these Ted Talks.

Tim Brown, Charlie Todds and Meklit Hadero

What made me really think? Why?

What I think about each of these references is WOW AMAZING! I love how of how each of the Talks made me think about myself. For example, when watching Tim Brown I had goosebumps, I thought about when I was a kid, I really loved to explore, to be creative in a way that was different than others, build and invent the craziest games or solutions for my friends. When growing up lot of adult people told me to stop thinking of things in a different way and to do how everybody does it, growing means that I always had to be serious and study and work, work, work. As a consequence I had forgotten a lot of things, and I really felt that I had lost something.

At the age of 20 I decided to be a nanny in my free time so I spend around 8 hours a week with a 1 year old girl, I really learned a lot of things from her! She was my favourite “teacher” for 3 years long. She made me remember a lot of things, like exploring in the nature or on the street, or to see things in a different way, or like that there is no need of embarrassment when doing something funny on the streets (like going to the park dressed like whatever she wanted me to wear) In these years together we build a lot of things from things we found in the house or in the park. We played role-play games and we draw a lot. This little girl remembered me how I love to be creative and how important it is to be playfull but also of course a serious adult. So these Ted Talk with Tim Brown inspired me a lot, the more I’m relaxed the more I can be creative. I really needed this Ted Talk because especially the first week at foundation I felt stressed and so not relaxed.

The second Ted Talk I laughed a lot! I really admire how these people spend their time in this way, I always loved the idea of doing things different to make other people think or act different or see things in a different way. So Charlie Todd gave me so much energy, I would love to be part of these experience.

The last Ted Talk with Meklit Hadero was interesting and it made me think about the first week of foundation, one of our tasks was to listen to John Cate ‘33 second’. When listening and watching to these video I thought: “when will the piano start playing?”. After listening to Meklit Hader, I understand it much more. She really has a beautiful way of hearing and expressing these sounds that she hears from everyday sounds. While listening to this Ted Talk I reflected on when I lived in Italy. There, I really learned to listen to silence. I lived near my grandmother in Italy, she had a little house next to my parents holiday house. I chose to live in Italy for 8 years to study and to be an independent women. This house was “in the middle of nowhere”, surrounded by nature and fields. In the beginning of my stay there I found that there was too much silence, so I bought a really big music stereo. Every time I was at home, I would immediately switch on the stereo. Often, in the night, I would watch TV to help me fall asleep, to compensate the “silence”.

After some years my grandmother got sick. She lived alone, and I was the only one that could hear if she was not feeling well. I would assist her anytime she would need, nights and days. I stayed many nights awake waiting for my grandmother to fall asleep. Thanks to this, I learned to listen to the sound of silence, and understood the importance of listening. I realised that the most beautiful sound that I ever heard was the sound of nature. Such as: the sound of animals walking at night on the grass; the birds tweeting in the morning; the sound of the wind; even my own breath; and many, many other sounds. That’s when I learned to listen to the sound of ‘silence’. One of the things that I missed as soon as I moved to the city was listening to the sound of nature. Because of this, I sort of refused to pay appreciate the city sounds and the new noises around me. However, thanks to this video, I will start to pay attention to the sounds around me and appreciate them more. Therefore, I can conclude that Meklit Hadero made me reflect again about the importance of sound.
